World Rabies Day 2023: ‘All for 1, One Health for All’

by: Daniella Ocampo Quevedo

September 28 marks the 17th annual World Rabies Day; annually commemorated to raise public awareness of the disease and ultimately to eradicate human fatalities from pet-mediated rabies globally. This year’s theme is “All for 1, One Health for All,” highlighting that One Health is for everyone, not a select few, according to World Rabies Day coordinator Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC).

Following the success from the 2022 World Rabies Day theme, “Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths,” this year’s theme remains focused on One Health, the nonprofit organization explained on its website. The GARC suggests commemorating World Rabies Day with a canine vaccination campaign, educational initiatives, improving or undertaking laboratory diagnosis, capturing or reporting rabies data, partnering with others, or advocating for its eradication in line with this year's "All for 1, One Health for All" theme.

The subject for this year emphasizes the value of a multidisciplinary, cooperative approach to effectively combat rabies. It emphasizes the critical responsibilities performed by experts in the fields of environmental, animal, and human health in halting the spread of rabies. We may work to create a world without the rabies danger by banding together under the tagline "All for One, One Health for All."

Notwithstanding the fact that rabies is a completely avoidable illness, almost 60,000 individuals worldwide perish from the aforementioned virus every year. On this day annually, we're afforded the chance to take stock of our progress in eradicating rabies while also being reminded that there is still effort to be done. Therefore, be an ally in combatting rabies by keeping your pets up-to-date with their rabies vaccinations which protects not only your pet but also you and your family from the virus.
